Should I put my suicide experience on my college application?

I'm 17 years old, and have committed a half-hearted attempt at suicide. I learned a lot from the experience and have been able to overcome my depression and personal challenges. It's furthered my interest in clinical psychology and I want to devote my life to helping people who go through similar times. I would like to put it on my college app and several people have said it's a good idea, but my mother disagrees that it would get my application immediately rejected. I don't have any other way to stand out really, psychology has always been my pion, but if I can't put the one thing I feel would give me a greater ability to help others on my application, what should I put instead?
