What is existentialism?

I have to write a paper on a film that contains existential themes, but I am confused on what existentialism really is. Films that have been suggested are Fight Club, The Shaw-shank Redemption, and Garden State. What are some of the existential themes in these films or do you have any better suggestions of films I could watch.
